![]() ![]() There’s nothing like it, and if you’re a photo geek who’s never experienced it, you should try to fix that.īut let’s not pretend the process is without barriers to entry, real and perceived. ![]() ![]() The depth of the image, the ritual of curating and loading slides, the sensory stimuli of the process, and of course, the sheer wonder of seeing an image projected through pure optics. It hit me then that there’s something special about slide film and projectors. My wife did come and see, and though she has virtually no interest in cameras or vintage photo gear, the massive image with brilliant clarity that was shining in the dimly lit room made her stop and stare. ![]() My daughter’s excitement renewed itself as she pointed out and named each member of her family, and yelled to the other room for my wife to come see. When she was finally finished bouncing, I pressed a switch, and with a metallic rattle and a sequence of clacks the image of the castle slid away, replaced moments later by a shot of our family running through Tomorrowland. She loved that place, and for as long as the projector beamed its magical light, she was there again. There, towering six feet tall, was a shot I’d made of Disney World’s Cinderella Castle. These were the sounds that rang through my house the first time my daughter saw a photo projected on the wall of her bedroom. As far as I know, the lenses are all interchangeable and for details there's plenty of info online from Kodak.įor viewing, any flat matte-white wall surface will do, but if you want to look for a portable projection screen, I like the glass-bead type better than the lenticular ones.Gleeful giggling, happy screams, and the thunderous reverberations of a three-year-old girl hopping up and down on hardwood flooring. I have one of each type and an important difference is that the Ektagraphic lens can be taken apart for cleaning while the Carousel lens is permanently glued together. Ektagraphics might tend to have suffered more from rugged institutional use while Carousels have probably spent most of the last 20-40 years in a closet. The professional-grade models are called Ektagraphics and they are supposedly more durable than the consumer-grade Carousels, but the differences seem slight. Look for machine from the late 70's onward because these will have the modern halogen bulbs. I don't know if there's a limit to how long you can leave an image up, but there's an air-cooling system blowing on the slide, so it's several minutes at least. I got my pair from a thrift shop and an estate sale, but there's always eBay. I don't know what's generally available in Japan, but Kodak Carousels are plentiful, durable, work very nicely, can still be repaired and the trays are easy to find. ![]()
